There's no single "best" time to visit Vietnam — because the country is **long and narrow**, stretching over 1,000 miles north to south, the weather in Hanoi can be completely different from Ho Chi Minh City on the same day. The trick is matching your **timing to the region** you want to see.

## The three-region rule

Vietnam splits into three climate zones, and they don't peak at the same time:

| Region | Key places | Best months |
|---|---|---|
| **North** | Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long Bay | **Oct–Apr** (cool, dry) |
| **Center** | Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An | **Feb–Aug** (dry, sunny) |
| **South** | Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta | **Dec–Apr** (dry season) |

## If you want one answer

**The most reliable window for a whole-country trip is roughly February to April.** During these months the south and center are dry and warm, and the north is cooling into pleasant, comfortable weather. **October–November** is the second-best all-rounder.

## North Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long Bay)

- **Oct–Dec:** Cool, dry, clear — arguably the loveliest time. Great for Ha Long Bay.
- **Jan–Feb:** Cold (especially in mountainous Sapa), sometimes misty.
- **May–Sep:** Hot and humid with heavy summer rain.

## Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Da Nang, Hue)

- **Feb–Aug:** Dry and sunny — beach season for Da Nang and Hoi An.
- **Sep–Dec:** Wettest period, with risk of flooding in Hoi An, especially **Oct–Nov**.

## South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta)

The south is **warm year-round**, split into two seasons:

- **Dry season (Dec–Apr):** The best time — sunny and comfortable. Peak is around Dec–Feb.
- **Wet season (May–Nov):** Hot, with short, heavy afternoon downpours that usually pass quickly.

## A note on Tết

**Tết** (Vietnamese Lunar New Year, usually late Jan or Feb) is the country's biggest holiday. It's a fascinating time to experience, but **many businesses close**, transport books out, and prices rise. Plan carefully if your trip overlaps it.

## Quick picks by priority

- **Ha Long Bay & the north:** October–December.
- **Beaches in the center:** April–July.
- **Mekong Delta & the south:** December–March.
- **Whole-country trip:** February–April or October–November.

## Frequently asked

**Is there a rainy season across all of Vietnam?** Not at the same time — the regions have different wet seasons, which is exactly why timing depends on where you're going.

**Is it worth visiting in the rainy season?** Yes — southern rains are often short afternoon bursts, prices are lower, and the landscapes are lush. Just avoid central Vietnam during its Oct–Nov flood risk.
